Buying the police car is not quite the cheapest part of it, but almost.
Judy Lehman, the city’s purchasing manager, on Wednesday detailed the costs to the city to add 17 new police squad cars to the city’s fleet and to outfit the squad cars with everything a squad car and police officer need these days.
The price tag for each of the 17 Ford Crown Victorias: $22,533.
The price tag to outfit each of the cars: $18,883.
The package of add-ons that help transform a car into a squad car consist of a radio, video camera, radar unit, lights and siren, GPS system, laptop docking station, wiring, partition between back and front seats and installation of it all.
The total cost of the cars with the add-ons, $704,072.
Dennis Hogan, the city’s fleet manager, on Wednesday said the thought is to outfit each car in similar fashion so a police officer is at home no matter which car he or she is driving.
Hogan noted that the 2011 model year is slated to be the last for the Crown Vic, which has long been attractive to law enforcement agencies.
